The Care of Baby Teeth
Babies should have their first dental check up at the age of one year or less. This is a good time to start with a pediatric dentist, This type of dentist just sees babies and children and not adults.
Beginning early do wipe out your babies mouth with a soft clean cloth after each time it nurses or eats. Decay can begin as early as 6 months which is right when the first tooth appears.
Decay can be dark or white spots that appear on the enamel of your baby's tooth. Something found that contributes to early decay of baby teeth is giving your child a bottle to drink in bed. If this bottle contains fruit juice of any kind that is even worse. As this will stay on their teeth all night.
Do begin brushing with a soft bristle smaller sized tooth brush at the first sign of teeth appearing. But do not just hand the toothbrush to a small child. They are considered a choking hazard at this age. Supervised parental attention to dental care is required. As the child grows do replace the tooth brush about every six months.
Find a good pediatric dentist by asking friends and family. If nothing comes up there then look online. You can find dentists in your area and then read the reviews from other patients. This can be very helpful. Also, try to keep the baby dentist close by. Do not go to one twenty miles away. If you do that and an emergency happens it could matter a great deal. Plus this keeps the baby happy no long drive each time.
Another good place to locate a pediatric dentist is at your own dentists office. And also the child's pediatrician might have heard of a few good pediatric dentists to recommend.
Temporary baby teeth start to grow in when your child is around 6 months. They will all be exchanged for adult teeth by age 17 years. But good dental habits can be instilled during this time.
